NOKOMIS - Voices of Anishinabe Grandmothers
Native American resistance to cultural genocide has continued for over 500 years. In the spirit of resistance, three Anishinabe grandmothers from Minnesota and Wisconsin share their deeply personal life histories, their respective journeys of cultural reclamation, and their vision of future generations which has led to their activism. We join these wonderful women as they fight for treaty rights and the repatriation of sacred items from museums, are arrested over fishing rights, begin wearing their traditional moccasins, and continue the traditions of their grandmothers. Archival footage and family portraits peppered throughout the film create a poignant backdrop for this personal, potent history.

54 minutes; Color

"This film wields a quiet power as, like three prodigal daughters, these women return spiritually to the roots from which they were so unceremoniously yanked."
- Suzanne Sigmund, The Circle
NOKOMIS is the story of pain and resultant empowerment by native women who refuse to "take any more. We will save what is left". This is a universal cry to action for the human spirit and resounds in every heart.
A "must see" experience.
